IUP Scholarships Available for Study Abroad Students

Students applying for study abroad with the IUP Office of International Education will be presented with a scholarship application (for the following five scholarships) online. 
  • Minimum criteria for the following scholarships: 
  • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at IUP
  • Must be participating in a full time study abroad program sanctioned and approved by IUP
  • Must have earned a minimum 2.5 grade point average and be in good academic standing
  • Study abroad must be a minimum of one academic semester (except Hernandez summer scholarship)
  • Must demonstrate self-reliance, maturity, and flexibility to deal with the challenges and opportunities associated with study abroad programs
  • Preferences will be given to students who have financial need
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or legal Permanent Resident.

 

John F. & Yvonne Galli Trettel Scholarship
The Trettel study abroad scholarship shall provide scholarship support to students enrolled at Indiana University of Pennsylvania for study abroad educational and/or international cultural experience opportunities in Western Europe, favoring such countries as Italy, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In addition to requirements listed above, the Trettel Scholarship candidates must meet the following criteria for consideration:

  • Must be a non-foreign language major
  • Must have completed a minimum of 48 credits
  • Must be candidate’s first overseas experience

 

Lieutenant General Joseph S. Laposata and Anita L. Laposata Study Abroad Scholarship
The Lieutenant General Joseph S. Laposata and Anita L. Laposata Study Abroad Scholarship shall provide scholarship support to students enrolled at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In addition to requirements listed above, the Laposata Scholarship candidates must meet the following criteria for consideration:

  • Must have completed a minimum of 48 credits
  • Study abroad programs in Italy, Portugal, or Spain.

Dr. Patrick A. Carone Study Abroad Scholarship 
Candidates must meet the above criteria for the Carone Scholarship for consideration.


The Geletka Family Study Abroad Scholarship 
In addition to requirements listed above, the Geletka Scholarship candidates must meet the following criteria for consideration:
  • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at IUP
  • Must be a declared Anthropology major, preference will be given to students in the Archaeology track

Herlinda Hernandez Study Abroad Scholarships for Study Abroad (at UDLA-P, Mexico) 
In addition to requirements listed above, the Hernandez Scholarship candidates must meet the following criteria for consideration:
  • Declared  Spanish Major (Spanish or Spanish BS for Education)
  • must be going to University of the Americas, Puebla in Mexico (UDLA-P) through the IUP Exchange program.
  • students must be of Hispanic decent (at least one parent must be Hispanic)
  • student must be a first generation college student
  • junior standing or a minimum of 57 credits at the time of exchange (for semester)
  • sophomore standing or a minimum of 29 credits at the time of exchange (for summer)
  • 2.5 overall GPA and 3.0 GPA average in Spanish courses at IUP


Marla Sabo Scholarship for Studies Abroad
In addition to requirements listed above, the Marla Sabo Scholarship candidates must meet the following criteria for consideration:
  • Awarded to a junior or senior each academic year studying abroad for a minimum of at least one semester
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Preference will be given to students from the Eberly College of Business and Information Technolog
  • Preference will be given to those who demonstrate financial need
Eberly College of Business and Information Technology (ECBIT) Study Abroad Scholarship
ECBIT shall provide scholarship support in the amount of $500 each for two qualified Business students enrolled at Indiana University of Pennsylvania for study abroad at the University of Macau through IUP's Crimson Hawk Exchange program.  

Eligible candidates must meet the following criteria for scholarship consideration:

  • Must be participating as a full time study abroad student at the University of Macau (minimum 12 earned educational credits)
  • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate, Business student at IUP
  • Must have completed a minimum of 24 credits
  • Must have earned a minimum 2.5 grade point average at IUP and be in good academic standing with IUP
  • Must study abroad at the University of Macau for a minimum of one academic semester
  • Must demonstrate self-reliance, maturity, and flexibility to deal with the challenges and opportunities associated with study abroad programs

Deadlines:

  • Fall Abroad: January 15 (after you return)
  • Spring Abroad: January 15 (before you leave)

CHANCELLOR JOHN C. CAVANAUGH INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION AWARD
 
This award was established by the PASSHE International Education Council (PIEC) and the Chancellor’s Council of Social Equity, Campus Climate and Inclusion (CCSECCI) to acknowledge and applaud Dr. John C. Cavanaugh’s dynamic leadership.  Dr. Cavanaugh served as Chancellor of PASSHE from July 1, 2008 thru February 28, 2013 and worked diligently to increase and improve international education experiences for students within PASSHE.  
 
The purpose of this award is to provide funding for a PASSHE student(s) to participate in an international education experience including programs such as student and teacher exchanges, second-language learning, and educational cooperation between schools in different countries. 
 
Eligibility Requirements
 
Eligible candidate must meet the following criteria at their home institution at time of study abroad departure: 
 
Ø  Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at a PASSHE university
Ø  Must be a Pell Grant or PHEAA recipient
Ø  Must be a resident of Pennsylvania
Ø  Must be participating in an institutionally approved overseas program
Ø  Must be in good academic and judicial standing
Ø  Preference will be given to students: 
o   Who have no overseas experience
 
Number of Awards and Amount Awarded
 
One $750award is available for the Fall 2013 semester
 
Student Requirements
 
Ø  Complete the Chancellor John C. Cavanaugh International Education Award application
Ø  Submit one written academic reference from a university faculty member
Ø  Submit an official university transcript
Ø  Prepare a typewritten personal statement of 250-500 words on the following points:
o   Why did you choose this program?  What do you hope to gain?
o   Describe any previous international experience(s)
o   If awarded, how would the money support your goals?
o   Address how you would share your overseas educational experiences with other PASSHE students or the community of Pennsylvania upon your return to campus

NOTE:  Recipients of this award will be required to provide a written after-action report to the PASSHE Foundation which will be shared with private funders and prospects.  Recipients are also required to participate in activities and share their overseas experience with other PASSHE students and donors (scholarship luncheon, presentations, information sessions, newsletter/paper articles, etc.)
 
Selection Procedure
 
The Chancellor John C. Cavanaugh International Education Award Selection Committee is comprised of representatives from the PASSHE Foundation Scholarship Committee and the Office of the Chancellor. The award recipient will be notified of the award by late June/early July. Unsuccessful applicants will also receive notification.

PSECU INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION AWARD

 

The Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union (PSECU) started this award to provide funding for PASSHE students to participate in international educational experiences to help them explore cultures, life experiences and world views different from their own.

 

Eligibility Requirements

 

Eligible candidate must meet the following criteria at their home institution at time of study abroad departure:

Ø  Applicant must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at a PASSHE university

towards your degree and use qualifying financial aid to help pay for your
program, you must coordinate your study abroad experience through
IUP's Office of International Education (OIE).
